REMEMBERING
"EL FLACO EXPLOSIVO"
November 12, 1982
was the first and only time I cried when one of my
favorite fighters lost. Alexis Arguello had just
lost to Aaron Pryor in his attempt to win the first
fighter capture a World Championship in four
different weight divisions, a feat at that time was
nearly impossible. It was a day boxing die-hards
talk about to this day, it was also a date I won't
ever forget, it was also my birthday.

TOPES SHATTER 4 GAME ATTENDANCE
RECORD
A record-high 54,763 fans flocked to Isotopes Park
during the four-game mid-week set between the
Albuquerque Isotopes and Nashville Sounds from
Tuesday, June 23 to Friday, June 26. The mammoth
crowds easily shattered the previous record of
47,025 set during a four-game series, also against
the Sounds, in August 2006.
Tuesday’s attendance of 15,321 topped out as the
highest in the seven-year franchise history while
Thursday’s crowd of 15,083 came in at third.
Meanwhile, 13,083 came out for Wednesdays contest
while the series finale included 11, 283.
The arrival of Major League rehabbing Manny Ramirez
heavily influenced the crowds, but Isotopes pitching
and a closely-contested series kept them entertained
as the ‘Topes won three of four.
The Isotopes entered Friday ranked third in the
Pacific Coast League in attendance, averaging just
over 8,200 per game.

SCHMIDT BLANKS SOUNDS 2-0
For the third time in four games,
pitching ruled the day as Jason Schmidt fired 7.2
scoreless innings to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes
(38-37) to a 2-0 triumph over the Nashville Sounds
(42-33) Friday night at Isotopes Park, marking the
third shutout of the series. The crowd of 11,283 on
hand for the premier pitching performance brought
the four-game series attendance total to 54,763,
shattering the largest four-game attendance record
of 47,025 set in August 2006.
The mammoth crowds witnessed a rare phenomenon as
the ‘Topes posted a cumulative 0.69 ERA over 42
total innings. The Isotopes starters combined to
allow just two runs during the four-game set.
After getting a an hour late start due to a rain
delay, Schmidt (1-0) upheld the consistency,
scattering only five hits with seven punch-outs and
just one walk. The rehabbing big leaguer retired 10
batters in a row from the second to the sixth. After
a leadoff single to start the game, the right-hander
locked in, facing the minimum until surrendering
back-to-back singles with two outs in the top of the
sixth.
Albuquerque will head to Omaha, Nebraska tomorrow
for a four-game series with the O-Royals, Triple-A
affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Lefty Stephen
Randolph (3-2, 5.79) will take the mound for the
‘Topes against Royals right-hander Matt Wright (0-4,
7.67) in a 6:05 PM MT start from Rosenblatt Stadium.

TOPES WIN RAIN SHORTENED GAME

A one-hour rain delay at the start and another at the end
didn’t faze starter Scott Elbert as the southpaw led the Albuquerque
Isotopes (37-36) to a 4-0 shutout of the Nashville Sounds (42-32) in a
six-inning rain-shortened affair on a soggy Thursday night at Isotopes Park.
While the largest crowd in Isotopes Park history was on hand on Tuesday, the
15,083 in attendance Thursday braved the elements as the third largest. The
rain storm that delayed the start of the game was surpassed in intensity by
the one that ended it, as heavy rain and lightening ensured that the two
teams would not be able to complete the scheduled nine-innings.
Albuquerque will wrap up what has been a tumultuous series with the
Nashville Sounds tomorrow with Major League rehabbing righty Jason Schmidt
(0-0, 4.70) taking on Sounds southpay Lindsay Gulin (3-3, 5.37) in a 7:05 PM
start from The Lab. |
ISOTOPES HANDLE MANNY MANIA WITH
CLASS
When Albuquerque
Isotopes General Manager John Traub came over to
shake my hand prior to batting practice, he said to
me, "Are you enjoying the Experience" I replied with
"You mean the Manny debacle" Traub then said, "Its
been handled great"
I felt like a dummy, meaning to say "The Manny
Spectacular", which I apologized to Mr. Traub, he
just laughed and said, "Sometimes that happens to me
saying the wrong word."
All forgiven!

MANNY DRAWS OVER 15,321 FANS!!
ALVARADO STEALS SHOW IN TOPES 1-0 WIN
In front of a record crowd of 15,321
fans to see Major League rehabbing Manny Ramirez, it
was right-hander Giancarlo Alvarado who stole the
show, logging his best outing of the season while
holding the Nashville Sounds (41-31) scoreless over
seven innings of work to guide the Albuquerque
Isotopes (36-35) to a 1-0 victory Tuesday night at
Isotopes Park. The 1-0 game is just the second in
the history of Isotopes Park and the first time in
team history one total run was scored in a
nine-inning game.
Ramirez, who was making his first appearance of
three at Isotopes Park and batting leadoff, struck
out swinging in the first and grounded out to
shortstop in the third before departing after four
innings.
Alvarado (5-5) bested Nashville prospect Manny Parra,
handing the Sounds their fifth shutout of the season
while matching a season-best with the seven innings
and setting a season-high with eight strikeouts. He
allowed four hits for his second outing in a row,
all of which were singles, and didn’t surrender a
walk.

MANNY
NOT CONFIRMED JUST YET?
Earlier today I had a chance to ask
Albuquerque Isotopes President John Traub on the
possibility of Los Angeles Dodger Star Manny Ramirez
paying for the Topes next week to sharpen his skills
before being reinstated by MLB July 3rd; Ramirez who
is finishing a 50 game suspicion for failing a drug
test for a banned substance could possibly been here
in Albuquerque as early as Tuesday against
Nashville.

CLOBBERS YANKOVICH
Holly Holm dominated former unbeaten Duda Yankovich
with a 4th round stoppage. Holm was to fast, to fast
for the game Yankovich. Holm used lead left hands to
keep Yankovich of balance and confused. Holm broke
Yankovich's nose in the second round with a hard
right hand, from there it was a matter of time
before Holm halted her foe. The end came when

the doctor to take a look at Yanovich, it was there
that the doctor halted the fight giving Holm the

record to 24-1-3, while Yankovich fals to 11-1.
