FIREWORKS
STARTING UP WITH HOLM/SANDERSBy Andy Rivera Photo By Tom Hernandez Not much fireworks from the two combatants in they're first press conference back in March but their trainers had plenty to say. Mike Winkeljohn Holm's trainer felt it would be a great fight "If" Sanders shows up. "I have reservations that Sanders really wants to fight and when I start hear she is having ankle problems, I'm not to sure she will be here June 13th." Sanders trainer Jimmy Mallo countered by saying, "Holm hasn't seen anything like Mary Jo, ever and when she takes the title from Holm in her home town the boxing people will know Mary Jo is the best pound for pound!" Holm and Sanders will fight June 13th at Isleta Casino for the IFBA Jr Middleweight title, the card will be shown on PPV. Three other women's title's will be on the line Well it looks like Sanders will show up, as will hometown hero, Holly Holm Wednesday at Isleta Casino for the final press conference before they're big battle Friday night. This is a fight that has been in the making in the past year. Sanders even made a special trip to Albuquerque last year to see Holm defend her welterweight title against Chavelle Hallback in front an national audience on ESPN. Mallo says he wasn't impressed with Holm in her win. "Chavelle is a great fighter but she is a lightweight and Holm is a welterweight/Jr. middleweight. Did she stop her? No. Let's see what happens when she fights someone her own size?" Holm and Sanders share six common opponents all have been defeated by both expect for Rita Turrisi, who stopped Holm on a cut in 2004, but at the time of the stoppage Holm was way ahead on the cards. Holm's train Mike Wiklejohn stopped the fight to protect his fighter and in the long run paid off considering where Holm is now. Both Holm and Sanders looked to one day battle Layla Ali, but Ali seemed more content with her work outside the ring, with her endorsements. So Holm and Sanders was the next best thing for women's boxing. The fight is called "Finally" which with a world wide pay-per-view audience its finally time for women to hold the spotlight. Chevelle Hallback (26-5-2, 11 KOs) will defend her IFBA lightweight title against Jeannine Garside (7-0-1, 3 KOs); Los Angeles' Wendy Rodriguez (18-4, 3 KOs) and Hollie Dunaway (21-6, 10 KOs), of Van Buren, Arkansas, battle for the IFBA strawweight belt; and, in a ten-round flyweight bout, Eileen Olszewski (5-0-1) will fight an opponent TBA. Also slated will be a four-rounder between debuters Angelica "Danger Girl" Chavez, of Albuquerque, and El Paso's Alina Baltizar.
